Why we need the Apple Tree Room

Welcoming everybody

Worshippers, villagers and guests have been welcomed to the church in East Malling for hundreds of years. This warm welcome continues to this day with the church opening for well over five hundred scheduled activities - both religious and secular - every year.
The Apple Tree Room will give the church the essential facilities that such a well-used public building needs and will make the church truly accessible to everyone in our community.

Preserving our heritage

The Apple Tree Room will allow the church to continue to flourish. Only a flourishing church community will be able to continue to meet the substantial costs of maintaining this extremely fine Grade 1-listed building.
As a separate building, but still close to the church, the Apple Tree Room will be able to provide these essential facilities without harming the exceptional medieval interior of the church.

We need your help

Building the Apple Tree Room means raising in the region of £200,000 from many people and businesses in East Malling and neighbouring areas.
Whatever your connection to this church - as a parishioner, worshipper, or visitor - your donation will help this church to continue playing an important role in the life of the community in East Malling.
Thank you!

Meeting room and kitchen

The Apple Tree Room will house a multipurpose space for small meetings and church activities. Each week it will be used for the church's crèche and Sunday School. At present parents and small children are forced to climb a flight of steep stone steps and share the small choir vestry.
The meeting room will also be used for Parochial Church Council and other church meetings, which currently take place in the same cramped vestry of people's houses.
The Apple Tree Room will also house a small kitchen that will allow us to welcome users of the church with refreshments and simple meals.

By continuing an arc of neighbouring ourbuildings, the Apple Tree Room will be discreet and sympathetic to its historic surroundings.
The building will use an oak timber frame, visible inside and out, with a roof of handmade clay tiles matching those of the church's south porch. Walls will be rendered in lime mortar, coloured to match the stone of the church and the whole building will weather to complement the existing buildings.

There are regularly over a hundred people in the church and yet there are no toilets. This is particularly difficult for those with small children and elderly, infirm or disabled visitors to the church. We hope you agree this is unacceptable!
The Apple Tree Room will house male and female toilets and a disabled toilet with a door to the outside. Access to all toilets will be step-free and the disabled toilet will be accessible for wheelchair users.
The building will be connected to mains drainage, the bulk of which has already been installed.

The Apple Tree Room will be close to the church. A short, level path with discreet evening lighting will link the new building to the west door of the church.
As a separate building, the Apple Tree Room will provide more facilities than could be built inside the church, and for much less money.
